A long-standing major focus of my research has
been on the development of children's Mastery Motivation, indicated by their
persistence and pleasure in attempting to master challenging problems. |

Professor Emeritus, |
More recently, I have drawn upon my broad
research and teaching experience to write textbooks and articles on Research Methods and the use
and interpretation of SPSS. I have
published 11 books (including revisions) and about 100 articles and book
chapters on these and other topics. My research interests have been broad including: animal behavior and early experience, human socialization in infancy and adolescence, educational evaluation and student change, planning and institutional research in higher education, the history and philosophy of science, and consumer behavior. Over the years, I taught or coordinated a wide variety of courses in psychology, child development, consumer and family studies, and education. These include: introductory, developmental, educational, social, and experimental psychology; research methods; applied statistics;consumer behavior; and seminars in higher education. At NICHD, the College of Charleston, and Colorado State (CSU), I have mentored a number of graduate students, interns, and post doctoral-level investigators in psychology, human development, and merchandising. Since 1992, I have been adviser and/or the quantitative methodologist on over fifty Ph.D. dissertations in many aspects of education and human resource studies. I have also served on many other M.S. and Ph.D. committees at CSU as well as provided research advice to numerous graduate students. As you can see from my vita, from the 1960's to 1995, I had extensive administrative experience in higher education, including as an assistant and associate dean, director of institutional research, program officer at NIH and department head at CSU. I have been married for almost 50 years to Hildegarde Swanson Morgan, have two married children, Art and Lisa, and three grandchildren, Morgan, Samantha and Nia. In addition to family, I have a personal interest in genealogy and have visited all 391 U.S. National Parks since 1997. |
